July 5, 2007 - It's already clear to us that Beyond the Sword is the largest expansion pack the Civilization series has seen. After covering most of the changes to the core game, we thought we'd offer a look at the scenarios and mods that will also be included with the expansion. These include materials developed by Firaxis as well as content submitted by fans.
Rather than going over all eleven scenarios and mods at once, today we're just focusing on the ancient and historical additions. We'll be back in the coming weeks to take a closer look at the remaining scenarios, which feature either a futuristic or fantasy setting.

Charlemagne
There's been quite a hubbub over the inclusion of Charlemagne as leader of the Holy Roman Empire in the standard game, but this scenario makes things a little more understandable. The Frankish Empire has broken up and it's up to the player (and four other leaders) to reunite the scattered pieces of the empire and claim the throne. Of course, there are a number of other civs complicating the matter.

The Charlemagne campaign begins with players choosing their leader, from historical stars like Charlemagne and Eleanor of Aquitaine to the lesser-known leaders of Lombardy, Burgundy and Neustria. Using the advanced start rules, players will buy a rather substantial starting position.
Set in the medieval period, the units in Charlemagne's campaign are merely more detailed and varied versions of the core game's medieval unit list. The one notable exception is the new Supply Train unit. Your units won't be able to heal in enemy territory without the presence of a friendly supply train unit, so you'll definitely not want to neglect these, particularly since there are no healing promotions in this scenario. The trains are, of course, totally defenseless, so they'll be tempting targets for your enemies. You can win the Charlemagne campaign through conquest, but you can also win by courting the favor of the Papacy. Each of the Christian civilizations in the game has the chance to gain favor with the Pope by building Christian buildings, donating units and relics to the Papacy and going to war with the enemies of the faith. While you get some happiness and income bonuses from being in the Pope's good graces, the real plum here is that the Pope can confer victory on you by declaring you Holy Roman Emperor.

Crossroads of the World
The Middle East truly is the crossroads of three continents and it's a land that's as rich in commerce as it is in history. The Crossroads scenario allows players to pick one of five major civs and then drops them down in the Middle East with a number of lesser rival powers. Players may opt to play with core civs like Ethiopia or the Ottoman Empire, or take on the role of the more exotic Rasulids or Timurids. No matter who you choose, the name of the game is money. The first of the five major powers to amass 30,000 gold wins the game. You can get gold in all the regular ways -- taxes, conquest, trade, negotiation -- but there are two new avenues of income that are definitely worth exploring. The first is the new Raider unit. Coming in four different upgradeable versions, the Raider is basically like a land version of the privateer. It has no national markings and can attack freely without regard for diplomacy. It provides a nice gold bonus for pillage attacks but it can't actually conquer cities for you. For that, you'll need to rely on more traditional units. The second route to improve your finances is a guild-based recast of the core game's corporation system. There are five main guilds and a handful of minor ones here that, instead of granting additional resources, merely generate a steady flow of income. You'll use guildmasters instead of corporate executives to spread your guilds throughout the world. The maintenance costs for the guild headquarters is so high, however, that it's almost worth it to try to get them established in towns belonging to your enemy.

Defense
Easily the most "game" oriented of the scenarios we're featuring today, Defense is nevertheless an intriguing proposition for hardcore Civ players. Beginning with a small amount of cash for an advanced start buy, the player will have just enough to get a single city going before the game starts.

At that point, you'll be confronted with a wave of enemies who are hell bent on capturing your cities. If you can weather each wave of attacks, you'll be rewarded with additional gold for each city that survives. You'll then be sent to the Buy phase to buy new units, new cities and new technology before the next wave of attackers. It continues like this, getting more and more difficult over the course of twenty waves. If you can survive them all, you'll be declared the winner.
There are a number of additional complications however. First, units that are stacked together will be weakened proportional to the number of units in the stack. This keeps players from simply building a massive stack and sitting it out behind the walls of their town. Since most of the units you buy are suited to combat in a particular type of tile, you'll need to array your forces wisely if you want to win. You'll want to head out anyway because each new round includes a number of random goody huts that you can capture for a substantial cash bonus. Once the attacks start to intensify, you're going to need every dollar you can get just to keep the enemy from overrunning your defenses.

Gods of Old
Though a better title might be "Give Me That Old Time Religion" the Gods of Old scenario focuses on the religious struggles of the Ancient World. And when we say "Ancient" we mean Ancient. The pre-Classical civilizations and religions found here show just how competitive things could get when it comes to matters of the spirit. Religions in Gods of Old are founded through the normal method of discovering new technologies but players also have to worry themselves with building a single shrine to that particular religion. Once all the shrines are built, the winner is the player who manages to eliminate all shrines but his or her own. While that by itself should make for some interesting gameplay, there are a few other tricks waiting in the wings. First, by discovering Theology, a player can create the new Inquisitor units. Just as the Missionaries are designed to spread religion, the Inquisitors are designed to stomp it out. You can sacrifice your Inquisitors (of which you can only have three at a time) to eliminate any non-state religion in any of your cities. Gods of Old also finds a new use for the Great Prophets. Rather than simply spreading your faith, you can sacrifice the prophets to call down terrible disasters on enemy cities. All but two of the religions have a particular catastrophe associated with it. Enlil for instance, sends plagues, while Nanna strikes with a rain of meteors. Of the two who don't provide disasters, prophets of An will be sacrificed automatically to prevent any one disaster from hitting your towns. A seventh prophet doesn't seem to have any specific ability at all but is still useful for all the regular functions of a Great Prophet.

Rhye's and Fall of Civilization
Every once in a while we hear gamers wish for a version of Civ that adhered more closely to the historical timeline with regard to a civilization's appearance on the world stage. Rhye's and Fall of Civilization offers just such an experience. Designed to allow players to choose from two starting dates, 3000BC or 600AD, the game lets players pick whatever empire they want to lead and then drops them into the story at the right place and time. Pick Rome or Mongolia for instance, and you could find yourself late out of the gate while all the other civs have been building up their empires.

Since the empires are meant to represent their historical a bit more accurately, the bonuses and units have been tweaked a bit. Rome, for instance, enjoys double movement on roads within its empire's borders. Arabia gets a bonus to spread the Islamic religion in cities that it conquered. English fleets gain additional first strike chances.
There are also a large number of unique victory conditions for each civilization. Egypt can win by achieving a certain culture score by a certain date, or by building several ancient wonders. The Maya can win if they discover the Calendar by 600AD or if they manage not to lose a single city until the Industrial Age. England can win by getting three cities on each continent, being the first to circumnavigate the globe, or being the first civilization to enter the Industrial and Modern eras. With so many different victory conditions to go for, you'll really have to design a focused but flexible strategy.

WWII Road to War
Well, it wouldn't be an expansion without a World War II scenario, would it? This time around we're getting three versions: one each for the Pacific and Europe starting in 1936 and one just for Europe beginning a little hotter in 1939. Players can opt to play as the big boys in the conflict or try for a more limited involvement with a minor power like Siam, Norway, the Balkans or the Dutch East Indies. (All the civs make the Foreign Advisor screen a little crowded, but you 32-player types should have no problem with it.)

The iconic units are all here, from the Zero fighters to the Panzer IVs to the B-29 bombers. Unfortunately, all the sea units are a bit generic so we won't see Fletcher class destroyers, Hipper cruisers or Soryu carriers. Interestingly, you will need specific factories to produce specific types of units so you'll need to plan your infrastructure carefully.
What's even cooler is that you can actually order air strikes specifically against these production buildings. It works just like a regular air mission, except that you choose to target either non-military or military buildings. You can even target improvements around the enemy cities. The new artillery units in the scenario can also target improvements or units outside of the cities. The two European scenarios also include Bitter Winter events that simulate the hard winters of the Eastern Front. When the ground freezes over, movement and healing for all forces will be cut down drastically and the combat will shift the advantage even more towards the side of the defender. The World War scenarios are easily the biggest new scenarios in the game and are better suited to players who are willing to dig in and stick with it for a while.

我倒觉得civdenfense有些意思,是一个更偏重于战术的剧情

截图的第三张就是文明兴衰中的蒙古,能力太恐怖了..........
毁灭掉一座城市会使周围的城市投降,难怪蒙古那么晚登场还有戏唱........

但是,老美为虾米认为1936才是太平洋战争开始?!俺觉得是1931。9。18吧

国际上一般认为1939年是2战的开始。而美苏的参战才标志着2战的展开

国内有人认为是1937年开始,也有认为是1939年开始的

31年的事变太早了,那时日德意的三角关系还没形成呢
